Ikea to start mass producing LED Lamps, 6 year lifetime.

IKEA may be habitually averse to blowing its own horn – and many times with its combination of price and practicality it doesn’t need to tout its own efficiency or sustainability efforts. The two new LED-based lighting series called Jansjö (‘Yann-Hwe’ is the approximate Swedish pronunciation) and Lack will, however, probably put the press on other lighting manufacturers to make LED lighting warmer and more affordable. Perhaps the Jansjö won’t win any design awards, as it looks a little bit like an outdoor shower. The Lack series pictured is also as spare as it gets. And IKEA isn’t the only light design company to start using warmer light LEDs. But when the Swedish uber-furniture superstore starts selling a full-sized LED floor lamp that promises near to 6 years of bulb time for around US$69, other designers pay great attention. Swedish company Optoga and Seoul Semiconductor designed a double layer of phosphorus oxide in the diode to give better color rendition and warmth. Via ::MiljöRapporten (Swedish)
LED ‘Gravity Lamp’ lasts 200 years
A Virginia Tech student has won the Greener Gadget Award for a clever LED lamp that gets all of its power from gravity, which is a seriously renewable resource. Working kind of like a grandfather clock that needs to be wound in order to work, the lamp has a weight that’s raised up every day. As the day goes on, it slowly lowers, with that movement powering the LEDs.

Dubbed the Gravia, the lamp will stand about four feet tall. Encased in glass, the entire thing is lit with a soft, diffuse glow that comes from the 10 built-in LEDs. Because it’s self sufficient, there are no cables or cords to worry about, so you can place it anywhere. The best part? It’ll last for 200 years if used 8 hours a day, 365 days a year. You’ll never buy another lamp again; it doesn’t get much more green than that.
