Loading Dock Lights

Camille Howe asked:

Loading dock lights are used on truck loading docks to bring light into long semi trailers and surrounding work area. The need is great as so little light often reaches the end of an enclosed trailer. For safety reasons and efficiency, it’s important to have proper lighting in loading dock areas. Loading dock lights have become enormously adaptable for numerous types of lighting applications, such as loading dock areas and warehouse work areas where work lights need to be portable. Loading dock lights are necessary for any business which does a lot of loading and unloading of heavy trucks. There are most likely other ways loading dock lights can be used in an industrial lighting situation where you want keep the light against a wall or swing out to provide ample light down the length of a truck trailer. Most companies provide several different types of loading dock lights including incandescent, halogen, high pressure sodium and rayton composite fluorescent work lights. Easy Rack?s loading dock lights reduce freight damage, expedite loading and unloading operations and provides consistent illumination inside semi-trailers or around dock worker areas. Plant Growth and Indoor Lighting

Susan Slobac asked:

Indoor gardening makes a great hobby, especially during the gloomy and cold winter months, where in many areas of the country outdoor gardening of flowers and vegetables is out of the question. Hydroponics gardening is a popular method used by indoor gardening enthusiasts. Hydroponics is a form of soilless gardening; it instead uses a growing medium (or not, depending on the style of hydroponics you choose) in which the plant roots sit, and they are fed through the application of a nutrient solution. There are a few basic supplies you will need to get started with hydroponics gardening, including a lighting system including grow lights, a ballast and reflector. You might need growing medium, and you will definitely need nutrient. The amount and kind of nutrient and growing medium you need will depend on the specific plants you wish to grow. You can start plants yourself from seed, or you can purchase plants from nurseries and greenhouses. Grow lights are vital to your success because without proper lighting your plants will not grow and thrive. Indoor lighting of your plants affects plant growth in several different ways.

The visible spectrum is the part of the light spectrum that we can see. This spectrum is represented in wavelengths and is measured in the Kelvin scale. The spectrum ranges from purple and blue on one end, greens in the center, and orange and red on the other end. Daylight ranges from 5000 to 6500 K. What all this means to the indoor gardener is this: you are trying to replicate outdoor sunlight in an indoor setting. Plants grown indoors need 12-16 hours per day under appropriate lights in order to grow well. The kind of plants you are trying to grow will also play a part in the type of grow light you choose to use. Grow lights that emit light in the blue spectrum are best for use in plants in which you want to promote vegetative growth, such as seedling plants or lettuces, for example. If you are growing flowering plants, or fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, you will instead want to use lighting that offers red/orange spectrum light. Light in this range is best for promoting flowering and fruiting in plants. Once you know what type of plants you wish to grow, then you can obtain the appropriate lighting for them to flourish.

There are many great HID lights, or high-intensity discharge lights, that work well in an indoor gardening application. They include HPS grow lights, or high pressure sodium lights, and metal halide grow lights. Because of the lower cost yet great light output, many indoor gardeners also like LED grow lights with light-emitting diodes as well.

Solar Shed Lights

Bob Gambrell asked:

Solar shed lights are a relatively new product on the market today. They consist of a small solar panel, a solar panel mount, a battery, an interior light and a wire that connects the battery to the interior light.  They work by capturing the suns energy with the solar panel and turning that into 12 volt electricity. That electricity is then transferred to a battery for storage. When the light is turned on at night by its own on/off switch it runs off of the internal battery.  It is all fairly simple and straight forward.

Most of the solar shed lights on the market today are easy to install, some easier than others. They are perfect for a shed, a boat house, a green house or a barn that has no electricity run to it. It is very inconvenient to try to search through a storage shed or a barn at night with a flashlight in hand. This product eliminates that at a very reasonable price. Solar shed lights can run anywhere from about $30.00 to about $100.00.

There are several things to look for in a solar shed light. First, what kind of interior light does it use? Some products use fluorescent tubes while others use Halogen or Xenon bulbs. The more popular shed lights use LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights. LEDs last a very long time and draw very little current so they will stay bright much longer. LEDs are virtually maintenance free while other types of bulbs must eventually be replaced. Replacing the bulb, while not difficult, does add to the cost of the unit.

The second thing to look for is the kind of battery it uses and if it is replaceable. Batteries will almost always wear out at some point in time and if they are difficult to replace or hard to find, again it just adds to the cost.  If the solar shed light uses LED lights it is also good to know how many lights are in the fixture. Some use 6 lights while others use 10 or even 24 LED lights. The reason that may be of some importance is LEDs are quite bright but also quite small. An interior fixture that uses only 6 LEDs may not be bright enough for all applications. The more LED used the more expensive the unit but I have found that the additional cost is usually worth it.

The last thing to discover is, how long does the light operate on a full charge? Most will work for up to 2 to 4 hours at a time on a full charge. Usually an hour or two is more than sufficient time to get what ever it is you need taken care of.  If you need to have a lot more time available at night then you need to consider a larger solar panel and larger capacity batteries. When you start changing out solar panels, batteries and light fixtures you get into custom configured solar lighting. Custom solar lighting is available but at a considerably higher cost.

There are new applications for solar products being invented all the time. Solar shed lights are a great example of this new technology. They are not very expensive, in the over all scheme of things and they serve a very useful purpose. Solar shed lights are easy to install on almost any surface. They also last a very long time with only minimal maintenance. It seems rare when a product comes along with a specific application that performs well, at such a modest price.

I saw this on one of those do-it-yourself websites and I was thinking that it looks uncannily like our Eternaleds company logo. Coincidence? I think not.

Wheres the number for my lawyer?

Wheres the number for my lawyer?

In fact, if I were make a real life version of that, that’s exactly what I’d do. Except instead of soil, it would be powered by pure awesomeness. Actually you could call this a solar-powered lightbulb and you wouldn’t be too far off. Looks really clean to boot. If I ever get a thumb green enough, I’ll try this and post it up.

At least I know what I can do with the bulbs I’m not using anymore

Emergency Vehicle Lights

Chris Dallman asked:

All the Law enforcement Departments, Ambulances and Fire Stations make use of Emergency Vehicle Lights to deal with heavy traffic. These Emergency Vehicle Lights are actually the warning gadgets that are used by the driver to alert people or to make them watchful so that they give you a way. When the driver uses the Emergency Vehicle Lights along with a siren the motorists understand that there is an emergency and they need to move out of the way so that the emergency vehicle can move about.

Emergency Vehicle Lights are even to alert people that a law enforcement officer or any other emergency vehicle is arriving. During the daylight, people can easily recognize such vehicles, but at night the only way to distinguish these vehicles is Emergency Vehicle Lights. The various departments make use of light bars and beacons as Emergency Vehicle Lights. In case of an emergency, the Emergency Vehicle Lights are used along with a siren to make people attentive.

Emergency Vehicle Lights are of different types, but three main varieties that are being employed are LED lights, strobe lights and rotating lights. Mostly the rotating Emergency Vehicle Lights use halogen or incandescent bulbs with a plastic dome over it. Strobe lights use xenon flash lamps and LED lights have light emitting diodes in them. Out of these three variations, LED lights are being used widely as they last for longer time duration. Usually the colors that are being brought into play in case of these Emergency Vehicle Lights are red, blue, green, transparent, white, purple and amber. The Benefits Of Led Lighting

Dominik Hussl asked:

LED Lighting has been around for a long time now, however until recently it was not considered to be a good source of light for white light. Recent developments in technology has made it possible for an LED light to give as much white light as a conventional light bulb therefore making it a viable source of lighting for many different types of applications. Light Emitting Diodes are currently seeing heavy use in automotive lights.

LED is short for Light Emitting Diode. This type of lighting is semiconductor powered and with recent developments in technology is capable of emitting as much light as a regular light bulb without the energy loss in the form of heat. This type of lighting is more energy efficient and will outlast any regular light bulb available in the market place today. California which is always the countries front runner on energy saving and environmental protection laws is in the process of passing and impending ban on all incandescent light bulbs by 2010, this alone stands as a testament that LED lighting can be used in all aspects of daily life as a viable alternative to the incandescent light bulb.

Lets Look at the differences between Light Emitting Diodes and other conventional lighting available today:

First we have old faithful Incandescent lights which create light by running a current through a thin filament which heats it to a high enough temperature therefore producing visible light. This process is highly inefficient because 98 percent of the energy used to create light using this process is lost in the form of heat. The typical life span of an Incandescent light is about 1000 hours.

Fluorescent lamps work by passing a current thru a mercury vapor, which in turn produces ultra violet light, which is then absorbed inside the light by a phosphorous coating which will begin to glow. This process is more efficient then the incandescent light, however energy is lost by creating the ultra violet light which is then absorbed by the coating to give off the light. In addition the mercury vapor can be dangerous to your health if the lamp breaks. Fluorescent lamps have a much longer lifespan then the incandescent’s do. The lifespan of a fluorescent light is about 10,000 hours.

Now lets get to the LED Light. This lighting achieves its illumination by clustering Light Emitting Diodes in an orderly fashion, thereby creating a unified beam. This cluster can consist of many white LED’s or a mixed group of colored LED’s which when grouped together give off white light. The advantages of Light Emitting Diodes are:

No Tube or filament to break

Light Emitting Diodes have a longer lifespan than incandescent and fluorescent lights

Power consumption is lower then any of the others

Due to their small size they can be sued in many different types of lighting applications.

Very little energy is lost to heat.

LED lighting emits more light per unit of current then most of today’s conventional lighting therefore making it the number one choice for energy saving light available. Energy bills can be reduced by up to 30 percent by switching over to this light source. Due to their construction Light Emitting Diodes are very durable they generally last 100 times longer then conventional lighting products. Since this type of lighting does not emit heat it poses little to no danger in the form of contributing to causing a fire. The longevity of this type of lighting is hard to surpass. Generally LED lights will last up to 50 thousand hours, which gives them a life expecting of around 10 years before they need to be replaced.

Many forms of LED lighting are now available for every aspect of daily life. LED light bulbs are being used in flashlights, residential lighting, automotive as well as landscape lighting. More and more signs are also utilizing this light source. If you have looked at a stoplight really closely you will have seen a led light in action. Light Emitting Diodes are also breaking in to the arena of rope lighting, boat lights, and floodlights. Christmas tree lights are now also going to LED’s because of its many benefits not to mention that due to the fact that these lights do not give off large amounts of heat they are much safer to use on a Christmas tree then conventional Christmas tree lights

Grow Lights Guide

Susan Slobac asked:

If you are starting out with indoor gardening, there is a lot to learn. One of the important environmental factors that you will need to provide for your plants is appropriate light. Plants need light for photosynthesis. Plants have the amazing ability to change light energy through photosynthesis into glucose and oxygen, which they need to thrive and grow. You will want to consider the grow lights you use in your indoor growing area very carefully, because it is a major aspect that will affect the success of your gardening venture. There are several new grow lights, and very popular ones include HID lights, HPS grow lights, LED grow lights, and MH grow lights. These are all hydroponic gardening grow lights, and all can be used with plants grown in soil as well.

HID lights go by the full name of high-intensity discharge lights. MH grow lights and HPS grow lights are also high-intensity discharge lamps. HID lights produce a great deal of light that more closely resembles sunlight than the light produced by either incandescent or fluorescent light bulbs, which is better for plant growth and reproduction. The way light is produced by HID lamps is when you turn the electricity on, the current runs through a ballast, which regulates the electrical flow to the electrodes, which are inside an arc tube, along with various gases and metals. When an electrical arc is produced, the gas in the tube helps start the light bulb, and the metals, once they reach the appropriate temperature, evaporate and produce the light that you see.

HPS grow lights make excellent hydroponic lights. HPS stands for high-pressure sodium, and these are used by professional growers to produce vegetables and flowers indoors commercially. HPS lamps use mercury in the arc tube, as well as sodium, and this makes for good color rendering, or colors showing up accurately when lit by the bulb. The spectrum color that a bulb gives off is important, because plants thrive under different colors depending on their stage of maturity. If you are trying to grow lettuce, for example, you will want to use the blue light spectrum under which it thrives. If you have mature tomato plants that you want to produce fruit and flowers, then you will want to use a red/orange spectrum to induce the plant to behave appropriately.

LED grow lights are called this due to a light-emitting diode that allows the lamp to produce light. These lights are handy because they come in an array of colors used in growing plants, and they produce a lot of light that is easily focused where you need it. They have a very long life as well.

Another type of grow lights are metal halide lamps. The arc tubes of these compact and efficient bulbs contain argon gas, mercury and a mix of metal halides. Like the other choices for HID lights, these lights require the use of a ballast in order to function properly.
