Solar Spot Lights: Powerful Night Lighting

Ernesto Maitim asked:

Solar spot lights, just like the other popular outdoor solar lighting, rely on the energy coming from our sun to offer sufficient lighting during the night time. And because the gadget runs on solar power, home owners need not connect into the electric grid to operate. This is great news, since dependence on the solar energy would only mean these solar spot lights will still work despite any possible incidents of brownout.

This type of outdoor solar lights is available as a single lighting unit or as a set of lights. Usually a pair of these lights comes with a corresponding solar panel which can be placed either near or far away from the lights. It is recommended that the solar panels of the lights are placed a few feet away from them.

The distance between the panels and these outdoor solar lights themselves actually allow for the former to optimally accept the energy from the rays of the sun, whether or not the lighting devices are exposed to the sun rays themselves. And while the solar panels of the spot lights are not built in, this means there are models that have more than average sizes. This allows for the solar spot lights to have more stored power which means longer lighting time.

More capacity to generate and store power also allow for multiple LED units to light up. It is ideal that 5 to up to 10 Light emitting diodes should be in solar spot lights in order to provide really powerful and bright illumination. The strong and focused light is the reason why it is called a spot light in the first place. If a light only has one or two LED, then this has less illumination, much like an accent lighting gadget.

Solar spot lights are best utilized to provide bright lighting on most part of your garden during the evening. You can train the light on a particular décor or tree to draw attention to it.  Such lights are also ideal for making your garden and walkway visible and safe for your night visitors to walk through.

Solar Shed Lights

Bob Gambrell asked:

Solar shed lights are a relatively new product on the market today. They consist of a small solar panel, a solar panel mount, a battery, an interior light and a wire that connects the battery to the interior light.  They work by capturing the suns energy with the solar panel and turning that into 12 volt electricity. That electricity is then transferred to a battery for storage. When the light is turned on at night by its own on/off switch it runs off of the internal battery.  It is all fairly simple and straight forward.

Most of the solar shed lights on the market today are easy to install, some easier than others. They are perfect for a shed, a boat house, a green house or a barn that has no electricity run to it. It is very inconvenient to try to search through a storage shed or a barn at night with a flashlight in hand. This product eliminates that at a very reasonable price. Solar shed lights can run anywhere from about $30.00 to about $100.00.

There are several things to look for in a solar shed light. First, what kind of interior light does it use? Some products use fluorescent tubes while others use Halogen or Xenon bulbs. The more popular shed lights use LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights. LEDs last a very long time and draw very little current so they will stay bright much longer. LEDs are virtually maintenance free while other types of bulbs must eventually be replaced. Replacing the bulb, while not difficult, does add to the cost of the unit.

The second thing to look for is the kind of battery it uses and if it is replaceable. Batteries will almost always wear out at some point in time and if they are difficult to replace or hard to find, again it just adds to the cost.  If the solar shed light uses LED lights it is also good to know how many lights are in the fixture. Some use 6 lights while others use 10 or even 24 LED lights. The reason that may be of some importance is LEDs are quite bright but also quite small. An interior fixture that uses only 6 LEDs may not be bright enough for all applications. The more LED used the more expensive the unit but I have found that the additional cost is usually worth it.

The last thing to discover is, how long does the light operate on a full charge? Most will work for up to 2 to 4 hours at a time on a full charge. Usually an hour or two is more than sufficient time to get what ever it is you need taken care of.  If you need to have a lot more time available at night then you need to consider a larger solar panel and larger capacity batteries. When you start changing out solar panels, batteries and light fixtures you get into custom configured solar lighting. Custom solar lighting is available but at a considerably higher cost.

There are new applications for solar products being invented all the time. Solar shed lights are a great example of this new technology. They are not very expensive, in the over all scheme of things and they serve a very useful purpose. Solar shed lights are easy to install on almost any surface. They also last a very long time with only minimal maintenance. It seems rare when a product comes along with a specific application that performs well, at such a modest price.

Solar String Lights: Perfect Lighting Accents for Parties and Holiday Occasions

Ernesto Maitim asked:

Do you want your home exteriors and garden accentuated by colorful lighting in the evening? Or do you simply want some cheerful tiny illuminations this Yuletide season? Fret not, as solar string lights can very well do the job. These outdoor solar lights are great for exterior decoration, especially for party occasions, the Christmas holidays or simply to brighten up any ordinary evening.

Many of us have been used to the traditional string lightings of different colors used in our parties and holidays. However, they consume a good, and expensive, amount of power.  On the other hand, solar string lights can do the job just as well, yet they are so affordable to own and can be labeled as environmentally friendly because it only uses solar energy as its source of power. Imagine putting a string of lights around your Christmas tree, lending great lighting accent to it, without any cost at all.

Solar string lights requires no complicated installation procedures; all you need to do is expose the solar panel fully to the rays of the sun for alternative power to be gathered and used in turning on the lights. It is so unlike the conventional lighting that needs to have long electrical wirings that usually go around the home. Unless the wires, which have live power running through them, are properly kept out of the way, conventional lightings can be prone to accidents such as people tripping over.

You just have to make sure that your solar string lights are able to maximize its collection of energy coming from the sun in order to fully change the batteries. Place the panels where there is no chance of shadows and shades hampering the gathering of solar energy during daytime. Remember your solar lights will not work to its optimum capacity if the batteries are not fully charged.

What makes these solar lights work? It is all because of LED or Light emitting diode technology. LED lights are small bulbs which work efficiently as they illuminate because of the fraction of power that they need. LED lights are also of excellent quality and very reliable. Hence, you are assured that your solar string lights will work for many years to come.

Solar Powered Landscape Lighting

Bob Gambrell asked:

Solar powered landscape lighting is becoming very popular these days and was even featured on Good Morning America, August 28, 2008. There is really no reason to use traditional wired landscape lighting unless there are areas of the garden that just do not get enough sunlight. Solar lighting is powered by the sun and must have some sunlight in order to operate properly. Five hours of sunlight is usually enough to keep the battery charged and ready for operation come nightfall. The lights use a photoelectric cell that turns them on at dusk and off in the morning.

Solar Lights are made from a variety of materials, such as plastic, metal or stainless steel. The lighting mechanism is almost always LED lights. LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) are quite bright, draw very little current and last a very long time, typically up to 50,000 hours. There is a battery to store the power, usually Lithium Ion or more commonly Nickel Metal Hydride. These batteries last about 2 years before they have to be replaced. The very inexpensive plastic lights do not have replaceable batteries, something to consider.  There is a small solar panel on top of the light fixture to generate power during the daylight hours to keep the battery charged, so the light will function at night. These lights are very safe and quite easy to install. Just find a location that gets ample sunlight, use the ground mount stake and drive it into the ground. Be careful not to hit the stake with a hammer if it is made of plastic, it may be damaged. Some lights can even be mounted on walls, posts or fences and often come with all of the mounting hardware necessary.

There are a wide variety of lights to choose from as well as a variety of applications. Solar walkway lights, light up paths or walkways. Solar spotlights light up trees and other outdoor features.  Solar Shed lights light up remote storage sheds with easy installation and minimal wiring. Solar address lights are self explanatory and there are even patio umbrellas with solar lights for that dinner party on the deck after sunset. The lights usually come in sets but the number of lights in a set varies. Some have two per set; some have four and some six. Prices seem to vary considerably with some sets costing $30 to $40 and others closer to $100. The difference in cost is reflected by the quality and brightness of the lights, how long they will last and styling.

So if you are considering installing solar powered landscape lighting you might want to ask yourself a couple of questions first. Is there enough sunlight to keep the lights powered? What kind of application will they be used for? What kind of styling do I like?  Am I looking for lights that will last a long time or do I just need them to last a little while? How and where will I mount the light and is all of the mounting hardware included? There are prices, styles and types for any budget or taste. Solar outdoor lighting is a great way to improve the look of your home and to improve the outdoor safety of your home. They are very easy to install and on top of every thing else, they will lower your energy costs.
